How To Delay Student Loan Repayment
To delay student-loan repayment: Deferment for up to three years is available to
federal Stafford loan borrowers who are out of work or facing economic hardship. Deferments are also available to students who return to school, as long as they are enrolled at lest half the time (six credits or more per semester or the quivalent) in an approved program.

Forbearance—temporarily reduced payments—is granted at lender discretion, usually for 12 months, to people who are ineligible for deferment but who are having trouble repaying student loans. See your lender for details on these programs.
